Directed by esteemed educator and performer Paul Contos, the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars Jazz Orchestra comprises 24 of the finest young SF Bay Area jazz musicians, selected annually by competitive audition. The ensemble has appeared at the San Francisco Jazz Festival, SFJAZZ Spring Season, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington Competition, Monterey Next Generation Jazz Festival, the Jazz Education Network Conference, the Healdsburg Jazz Festival, and at concerts in top professional jazz clubs and festivals throughout California.

Berklee Alumni Hailey Niswanger has an impressive list of accomplishments that reach far beyond the borders of her home in Portland, Oregon and well beyond her years. Niswanger has shared the stage with Dee Dee Bridgewater, George Duke, George Garzone, Red Holloway, Terell Stafford, Phil Woods, James Moody, Steve Nelson, Christian McBride, McCoy Tyner, Maceo Parker, Wynton Marsalis, Mark Whitfield, and other jazz greats. As one of 14 students selected to be part of the inaugural class of Berklee’s elite new Global Jazz Institute under the artistic direction of Danilo Perez, she has performed at the 2010 and 2011 Panama Jazz Festival, 2010 Newport and Monterey Jazz Festivals, and the Blue Note in New York. In the fall of 2009 Niswanger was named the alto saxophonist in the Either/Orchestra, an internationally renowned ensemble that performs jazz, Latin, and Ethiopian music, and so far she has performed with them at the Teatro Manzoni in Milan, Italy, the 2010 Chicago Jazz Festival, Ethiopia, and at various venues around New England.

The Lyrical Approach to Latin Jazz: Adopting Cuban and Brazilian Rhythms to Your Ensemble  
Pianist, musicologist, educator and author Rebeca Mauleón and saxophonist, educator and ensemble director Paul Contos explore and demystify some of the myriad styles associated with Latin music. Using the newly-released publication The Latin Real Easy Book (Sher Music) as a guide, Mauleón and Contos will demonstrate the technical as well as practical approach to playing Latin tunes for virtually any ensemble format – from combo to big-band. Featuring members of the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars, this clinic will highlight the practical use of the Real Easy Book format for teaching some of the world’s most intriguing styles.

3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Kendrick Scott Drum Clinic  
Kendrick Scott is an artist of incredible depth, talent, and determination. He has been featured in Terence Blanchard’s band for the last six years and has appeared on the Grammy Award–winning and –nominated recordings A Tale of God’s Will and Flow, on which he contributed original compositions and orchestrations. Since arriving in New York in 2003, Scott has appeared on more than 30 records and on the soundtracks to seven feature films. In 2007, Scott launched his own label, World Culture Music, with the release of Kendrick Scott Oracle and began his career as a solo artist. Kendrick Scott Oracle plans to release Conviction in the spring of 2012. This album, which blends Scott’s incredible intensity and sensitivity, is a demonstration of Scott’s strength as a drummer, composer, and a leader.
