RE Combo Founder and
Director Jon Alex Hamm has been forming and leading traditional Jazz Combos at every school where he has worked starting with Indiana State University in the late 1970’s. He formed the RE Combo upon his arrival at Ransom Everglades School in the fall of 1997, where his group gave their first performance for the groundbreaking of the school’s new Visual and Performing Arts buildings that same fall. Since that time the group has performed for formal concerts, fund raisers, major Visual Arts Shows, Black History Month, and school events such as the RE Parent’s Association International Treats and RE Auction over the last 20 years. The group has distinguished itself by earning straight A’s at both District and State festivals of the Florida Bandmaster’s Association each year for the past seven years. They performed for Hillary Clinton in 2000 and Author Gail Sheehy in 2001. Venues include Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, the United States Federal Courthouse in Miami, the Tennis Center at Crandon Park, and the historic Olympia Theatre in downtown Miami. Members have earned numerous national awards including performances in the 2008 and 2009 Honor Orchestra Of America, a soloist award in the June 2010 issue of Downbeat magazine, and the Florida All-State Jazz Band. RE Combo alums have gone on to major or minor in music and perform Jazz at colleges such as Harvard, Yale, Northwestern, the University of Pennsylvania, Vanderbilt, the University of Southern California, Columbia, and the University of Chicago. We currently have Jazz Performance Majors under scholarships at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami and Princeton University. Recent college graduates are performing, composing, or producing music in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago. The RE Combo won the Honorable Mention Trophy in the S3 Class of the 2016 Berklee Jazz Festival.
