Mr. Jon Alex Hamm directs the Symphonic Band, Guitar Ensembles, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Combo, and Pit Orchestra at Ransom Everglades School in Miami, Florida. Under Mr. Hamm’s baton, the RE Symphonic Band has earned superior ratings on sight reading for 14 consecutive years. The RE Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, and RE Combo have each earned superior ratings at district festivals. Soloists and ensembles including the RE Combo, RE Percussion Ensemble, and RE Sax Quartet have earned superior ratings at state festivals over the past several years, including numerous straight superiors and superiors with distinction in the most difficult level of music. The RE Symphonic Band has placed students in the Florida All-State Bands as well as the UM Honor Bands for 17 consecutive years. Recent graduates of RE and Mr. Hamm’s program have majored, minored, and performed in music at colleges such as Columbia, Yale, Harvard, USC/Thornton, UM/Frost, Cal Tech, MIT, Northwestern, and Vanderbilt/Blair Universities. In 2008 and 2009 he placed students in the Honor Orchestra of America in Indianapolis, IN. In 2010 one of his guitar students was named the Downbeat Magazine Outstanding Soloist in the category Blues/Rock/Pop. In May 2011 Mr. Hamm produced a performance of his RE Combo with featured artist Mike Malinin (Goo Goo Dolls). In 2012 five members of his RE Jazz Ensemble were named to the CAP All-Star Jazz Band. In 2013 the band competed in the Essentially Ellington Competition in New York, winning the Outstanding Sax Section award while working with Artists such as Wynton Marsalis. The same year a student from his studio was named the bass player of the newly formed CAP All-Star Prep Jazz Band. Mr. Hamm has hosted both the CGCC/CAP Community Arts Saturday Program and the Florida Bandmaster’s Association District 20 Honor Band at his school for the last several years. He graduated Cum Laude in Music Education in 1980 from Indiana State. He also did graduate work at the University of Miami, as well as DePauw and Indiana State Universities. He studied trombone and bass with artists from the Eastman School of Music and Indiana State, Illinois, Illinois Wesleyan, and Indiana Universities. As an educator, Mr. Hamm and his students have performed in Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, New York, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Massachusetts, and California, including appearances on local and national television. As an artist, Mr. Hamm played string bass in the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra from 1978-1986 and served as a member of the board. He has performed as a bassist with classical artists Garrick Ohlsson, Emanuel Ax, Jamey Laredo, William Warfield, Misha Dichter, Jerome Hines, PDQ Bach, Roberta Peters, and on trombone with composer Aaron Copland. As a Jazz and commercial music artist Mr. Hamm has performed on guitar, voice, trombone, and basses in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, and Florida. Mr. Hamm also worked in the film and print industries, appearing on local, regional, national, and international television. As a Jazz/pop bassist he has performed with artists such as Louis Bellson, Jimmy Smith, Melton Mustafa, Raul Midon, Pamela Blake (Broadway’s “Evita”), drummer John Snider (Eddie Money), and Grammy Award winning songwriter Paul Williams.
