Jennifer Witherell-Stebbins holds a Bachelor’s of Music in Music Education from Syracuse University, a Master’s of Music in Music Education from the University of Southern Maine, and a Master’s degree in Arts Administration from Savannah College of Art and Design. “Mrs. With,” as students call her, has been teaching at Thornton Academy since 1998 and has held full-time band positions in Frankfort-Schyler, NY and McGraw, NY, as well as Burns Elementary school in Saco, Maine. In 1998 she began as a part-time band teacher with three students in band at Thornton Academy. In 2000, the program was expanded to full-time, and today more than 100 musicians participate in the program which includes jazz band, wind ensemble, and concert band. The Jazz Band earned a top rating for Jazz in the State Jazz Festival in 2012, 2014, 2015 and 2016 and will present their 17th performance at the Berklee College of Music High School Jazz Band Festival this year. She has been a liaison between TA and USM, creating the Honors small ensembles X-block class for junior USM music majors and TA students alike. Mrs. Witherell-Stebbins has been a member of the IAJE, is currently a member of JEN (Jazz Educators Network), MMEA and MENC. She has been a member of the Mid-Coast Chamber Orchestra, and the Casco Bay Concert Band.
Jennifer completed the Master’s Degree in Arts Administration in 2016 from Savannah College of Art and Design. This degree consisted of classes in fund raising for the Arts, marketing the Arts, and professional writing. In addition to an internship with Creative Portland, and working toward the establishment of ArtsEngageMe, a non-profit agency for the Arts Commission in the state of Maine.
